Ten Years
MTS SUPER-SPIKE CELEBRATES TEN GREAT YEARS THIS JULY!
We’ve come a long way since the summer of 2002 when ‘Super-Spike Saturday’ was first launched. Yes it was only a one day event back then, created as a new initiative to help raise needed funds for our Winnipeg based National Volleyball Teams. We figured Winnipegers liked to play beach volleyball, they liked outdoor concerts, they liked attending festivals … so why not tie all those things into one. From 30 participating teams in year one, to 217 last year, and over $300,000 raised in nine years of the event, tells me we created a winning recipe!
Super-Spike has easily become one of Winnipeg’s best summertime events and ‘can’t miss parties of the year!’ This year’s 10th Anniversary will be the biggest and best yet, and we want to celebrate with everyone who has been a part of our past events, while continuing to expand and attract new attendee’s and teams. To do this our organizing committee came up with four main strategies:
- Bring back the band people have not stopped talking about as best show in Super-Spike’s nine years. So we confirmed the return of ‘The Trews’ as this year’s headliner
- Create a new masters division (35 plus) to ensure there are divisions of volleyball for all people, helping attract back the players that helped us kick off the event 10 years ago
- Give away a killer prize to one lucky participant at the event. Thanks to our friends at Bud Light, one lucky person will win an all inclusive trip for two to New Orleans this September to see the UFC as part of the Bud Light Battle of the Bayou getaway
- And most important of all, we are in the process of building 4 – 6 new additional sand courts at Maple Grove as a legacy for players to enjoy for years to come
